It starts innocently enough. An automatic car wash on your way home...
Don't be embarrassed, $5 is a GREAT deal, but remember that if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Automatic car washes; a cheap wash by the budding neighborhood entrepreneur; your well-meaning kiddos with the hose and sponge. You'd be discouraged to realize just how susceptible your car's paint is to complete and utter ruin. We detail-oriented folk are charged with the heavy burden of endlessly noticing swirl marks in paint...only those of us bold enough to step into the war on bad car washes become detailers.

WHAT IS THIS ORANGE, SPECKLED MESS IN MY PAINT?!?! Why won't it wash off?
Sorry to tell you, but those orange specks are rust. When we apply our brakes, microscopic metallic particles break free from our pads and rotors and embed themselves into our clear coat. Additionally, other environmental pollutants can contribute to the caucapony of debris mucking up your finish, and none of it is good. Though the look of it may not bother you, the fact that it's slowly eating into your paint should.

Here's the rub: Your car has three layers of paint on top of the bodywork. The first layer is primer and generally deters rust, promotes adhesion, and acts like a barrier between the metal/plastic surface of your car, and the basecoat. The second layer is the basecoat (which carries your pigment). Sensitive to UV rays and environmental contaminants, the paint is brilliant, beautiful, and snazzy, but is quick to fade, chip, or peel when left exposed to the elements. The third and most crucial layer of protectant on your car is the clear coat. Clear coats are anywhere from one to two millimeters thick, so it's no wonder they break down under our sun's relentless UV rays. As soon as your clear coat fails, your paint color will begin to fade. Your basecoat is not made to stand up against the onslaught of everything we throw at it, and by this point, the slope of decline has gone near-terminal.
...and full-blown paint chipping all the way down to your primer...
Depending on the manufacturer's paint process and the quality of paints they use, it is possible for the clear coat to pull layers of basecoat (the colored stuff) off with it, exposing the--usually grey--primer beneath. Unfortunately at this point, there is nothing further we can do beside direct you to a reputable paint-repair specialist.

What paint correction level do I need?
1-Step
Your car is new.
Yes, even new cars need correction. Often, the wrapping used during shipping causes hazing. It's also likely the dealership "wash team" used the same rags for your rims and your hood.
2-Step
Your daily driver.
Does it look like a spider laid webs across your car when you look at it in the sun? Has it been a while since it has been polished? Are you a serial "automatic car wash" visitor? It's okay. We won't tell.
3-Step
Swamp Monster.
Generally speaking, a 3-Step correction is very extreme and only used in rare cases. We will test a small area for paint thickness/quality before proceeding, and try to explain why a 2-Step is sufficient.
